네이버는 미국 자회사 웹툰엔터테인먼트(웹툰엔터)를 중심으로 글로벌 사업 확장에 나섰다. 웹툰엔터에게 왓패드 지분을 넘기는 수직 계열화를 추진하는데, 이를 위해 웹툰엔터 주식 41만3782주를 8389억원에 취득할 계획이다. 이는 웹툰 글로벌 사업 역량 강화를 위한 것으로, 네이버웹툰의 글로벌 넘버원 포지션 및 IP 밸류체인의 리더십을 강화하기 위한 것이다. 웹툰엔터는 네이버웹툰 모기업으로, 북미 웹툰 시장 공략을 위한 현지 거점으로 지난해 네이버가 인수한 왓패드 지분도 함께 이관될 예정이다. 이번에 취득한 웹툰엔터 지분 비율은 71.2%로 확대될 것으로 예상된다. 네이버는 웹툰 사업을 통한 글로벌 진출 확대를 추진하고 있으며, 이는 지난해 네이버의 콘텐츠 부문 매출이 대폭 증가한 것과 관련이 있다. 또한, 웹툰엔터는 미국 내 상장 가능성도 있다고 한다.

Naver is pursuing a business restructuring by transferring its stake in Wattpad to its U.S. subsidiary, Webtoon Entertainment, which is at the forefront of Naver's global business expansion. Naver plans to acquire 4,137,820 shares of Webtoon Entertainment for KRW 838.9 billion ($720 million) through a capital increase with the use of Wattpad's stake. After the acquisition, Naver's stake in Webtoon Entertainment will increase to 71.2%. The purpose of the acquisition is to strengthen Webtoon's global business capabilities and enhance its intellectual property value chain. With the acquisition, Webtoon Entertainment's corporate value is expected to rise, and Naver may consider a U.S. IPO within the next two to three years.
